Union County is roughly forty minutes south of Lodi on the Parkway or the Turnpike. It is a longer run than Bergen or Passaic and we schedule it accordingly, so a Union County booking is usually a planned visit rather than a same-hour one.

What the work looks like down here

Elizabeth, Linden, Roselle and Hillside are older and denser, with a lot of two-family housing and a lot of pre-war clay and cast iron. The jobs are main lines, shared stacks and grease.

Westfield, Cranford, Summit and Scotch Plains are different again — larger single-family houses on wide, mature lots, many of them built between 1900 and 1940. Long laterals under long front lawns with big street trees over them. These are the county's root jobs, and they are usually best handled as a recurring clean rather than a crisis.

Rahway, Clark and Kenilworth sit in between, with a mix of post-war housing where cast iron scale and grease are the more common causes.

Long laterals

The thing that distinguishes a lot of Union County single-family work from the dense Bergen boroughs is run length. A sixty- or eighty-foot lateral from the house to the street main gives roots more joints to find and gives a settled section more room to hold water. It also means a cable that reaches thirty feet has not reached the problem.

Where a line is long, a camera inspection before or after clearing is worth the money, because it tells you where along the run the trouble actually is. "Somewhere under the lawn" is not a repair plan.
