Bergen has seventy municipalities, more than any other county in New Jersey, and most of them are small. That matters for drain work in a practical way: a lot of these boroughs were laid out and built before 1960, on lots narrow enough that the sewer lateral runs under a driveway or a paved side yard rather than open lawn. What the housing stock means for your drains
Pre-war and early post-war housing across Lodi, Garfield, Hackensack, Bogota and the Rutherfords was plumbed with clay or cast iron laterals. Clay joints are the reason root intrusion is the single most common main line problem in this county — Bergen's older streets are lined with mature trees, and a root will find a clay joint long before it finds anything else.
Cast iron fails differently. It does not crack at the joints so much as scale from the inside, and the pipe narrows year by year until grease and paper stop moving through it. A cable will punch a channel through that scale; it will not take the scale off the wall. That is the distinction between snaking a line and hydro jetting it, and on an older Bergen County house it is usually the whole question.
Low ground and back-ups
Parts of the county sit low. The Hackensack River, the Saddle River and the Passaic all run through Bergen, and the Meadowlands boroughs — Carlstadt, Moonachie, Little Ferry, South Hackensack — are close to sea level. When the ground is saturated, a basement floor drain is the lowest opening in the house, and it is where water shows up first. A floor drain that has not been cleared in years will not cope with that.
If your floor drain is the one that backs up, the problem is often not the floor drain. It is the main line downstream of it, and the floor drain is simply the first place the water can escape.
