Density changes the job

Hudson County is the most densely populated county in the United States. That is not a statistic for its own sake — it describes the plumbing. Row houses and brownstones share walls, share yards and quite often share drainage. Lines run under front stoops and rear alleys with no open ground anywhere near them.

Three things follow from that, and they come up on nearly every Hudson County call:

• Access. There is frequently no exterior cleanout, or it is under a slab poured over it in 1985. Work is done through an interior cleanout or a pulled toilet, and that has to be planned rather than discovered at the door.
• Shared responsibility. In a multi-unit building, the line that is blocked may not belong to the unit that is flooding. Knowing where the shared section starts matters before anyone is billed.
• Combined sewers. Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, Bayonne and several of their neighbours are served by combined sewer systems that carry both sewage and storm water in one pipe. In heavy rain those systems run at capacity. A basement fixture that backs up only during a storm is telling you something about the street main, not necessarily about your lateral.

That last distinction is worth getting right before you spend money. If a basement toilet or floor drain backs up during downpours and behaves the rest of the time, cleaning your lateral may not change anything, and a backwater valve is the conversation to have instead.
