Passaic County starts about two miles from the Lodi base. Garfield sits on the county line, and Clifton and Paterson are directly across the Passaic River from the Bergen County boroughs we work in every day.

The oldest pipe we see

Paterson was America's first planned industrial city, built around the Great Falls in the early 1800s, and a great deal of its housing went up between 1880 and 1930. Clifton and Passaic filled in through the 1920s and again after the war. In practice that means Passaic County has the oldest residential drainage in our service area, and it fails in the ways old drainage fails:

• Clay laterals with open joints, and roots in them
• Cast iron stacks that have scaled down to a fraction of their original bore
• Lines that have been repaired piecemeal over a century, with transitions between three different materials in one run
• Two-family and three-family houses where several kitchens share a single stack, so one blockage takes out the whole building

That last one is worth saying plainly. In a multi-family house, a backed-up kitchen sink on the first floor is frequently not a first-floor problem. It is a shared stack, and clearing the trap under one sink will not fix it.

Why a camera earns its money here

On a house this old, nobody — including us — can tell you what is wrong with a buried line by looking at the ground. A camera inspection shows whether you are looking at roots, a belly holding water, a crack, or a collapse, and those four things have four different prices and four different fixes. Guessing between them on a hundred-year-old line is how people end up paying to dig up a pipe that only needed cleaning.
